Roadmapping History

In the early years of the ROS-Industrial Consortium, particularly when the organization was small and limited regionally, it was believed that detailed roadmaps by functoinal capability would lead to the creating of "app" level utilities that could be simply replicated, modified and deployed. This detailed roadmapping exercise was archived in GitHub and a detailed report was published in 2017.

Regional Strategies

Upon the establishment of the three regional Consortia it became clear that a more federated approach to managing and supporting the broader goals of the ROS-Industrial open source project would be needed. This enabled each region to leverage unique opportunities to receive funding to progress adoption, providing resources beneficial to industry and incentivize traditional industrial players in supporting the ROS framework.

This challenged the previous precise roadmap, in that each region had different slightly different focus, such as the ROSin initiative in the EU and later with the AP regional focus on what is now Open RMF. Though not as precise as the previous iteration of the roadmap, the different regions were sharing knowledge and providing support in different areas of need to prevent duplication of effort.

High level goals and Technical Vision

Since then the efforts across the regional consortia and the ROS-Industrial community have informed efforts to realize new capability, while adhereing to elements of quality, improved user experience and novel intelligent capability.

Each region works with its members and Consortium Advisory Board (CAC) to refine and create detailed action plans and higher level roadmaps that align to this broader mission.

Communications on updates to the roadmap will be made here at the ROS-Industrial website and presented via ROS-Industrial events and communication channels where feedback and discussion can improve execution and realiztion of a shared vision.
